Hello again! And update on school ratings
It’s been AGES, y’all!  Sorry about that.  I’ve got a million excuses but they are mainly trying to work full-time and be an attentive mother to my kids (now ages 7 and 4!).  Oh and be a non-stressed wife. This wonderful fun project of mine, dear Move to Austin, has unfortunately had to take a back seat.We did not move abroad either.  I could not handle the stress of it.  Plus I love Austin.  For those who were wondering.

I have gotten quite a few comments asking if the school info is up-to-date, and here’s where I’d like to address that.

As I mentioned in a previous blog post, Texas overhauled their ratings system.  They didn’t even put out ratings for the 2011-2012 school year while they were doing this.  They just put out ratings for the 2012-2013 school year and from what I’ve seen, it’s a different system wherein a school gets a number score, like Austin High School scored a 85%.

So in the meantime I’ve got to figure out how to update my maps to show this new style — if I can get the data first.  I’ve downloaded a HUGE file that crashes every time I use it.  It’s coming, just taking a bit of time.

I think that the 2010-2011 ratings are still a good reference in the meantime.   Like always, they should be a tool to use in addition to other resources.  Like what, you say?  Personally I am a fan of coming on a scouting trip, going to a neighborhood you are thinking of moving to, camping out in a Starbucks or a park and stalking parents.  When you see one, ask their opinion.

I honestly picked my neighborhood and school based on liking the Brentwood park (and the parents I saw there) over other parts of the city.

This site is a wealth of information! My wife and I are looking at homes in Round Rock, with a strong (nearly obsessive) focus on schools, though we may also scope out the southwest/Dripping Springs areas, and maybe Cedar Park/Leander.

A lot of schools look great on paper (we’ve made a seriously extensive chart comparing every school in RRISD), but there are little things you only learn through living in an area and word of mouth.

Should we be looking entirely into homes on the Spicewood/Laurel Mountain/Caraway to Canyon Vista to Westwood route? Or is it “just as good” to go the England/Brushy Creek – Cedar Valley – McNeil or Old Town – Walsh – Round Rock routes?

I don’t know of any off the top of my head. I check out Eater Austin or the Austin Chronicle for that kind of information. Well — obviously Eater Austin is more for restaurants. Maybe the Austinist too?
