You should live here if you consider yourself an artist, musician, bohemian, or at least a creative simpatico. You love going out to restaurants and hearing your favorite band play at a club. You only buy Macs, never PCs. Buying a home in this neighborhood seems like a terrific investment to you. Sure it’s expensive per square foot, but the potential for resale value is huge! This is the place for non-Texan liberals who aren’t sure they’ll make it in the South.
78704 is our most well-known “true Austin” neighborhood, though that thought makes me laugh as this is the first place creative outsiders look to move and is therefore home to many transplants. Do yourself a favor and entertain the idea at least. It’s a great place to land in the city if you’re young and renting. You’ll find a lot of other new people and may find your social life bloom here.
It’s hard to buy in this area due to the overwhelming demand and low supply. Come armed with truckloads of cash (homes go to quickly to cash offers here), or else start thinking about expanding your search.
Travis Heights has grand old homes with huge live oak trees on rolling hills, alongside some quaint smaller bungalows. Boudin Creek also is made up with the quaint smaller bungalows but increasingly also boasts ultra-sleek modern mansions. Zilker is similar, and is close to Austin’s amazing Zilker Park. Barton Hills has some 50s, 60s and 70s ranches that nestle along the Barton Creek greenbelt. Most families I know that settle in this area choose Barton Hills or Zilker due to the schools.
If you love funky homes, shopping and restaurants, 78704 is your kind of place.
